Over the last few years the interview process has evolved from simple, straightforward questions and quick decisions to a structured approach which accurately predicts a candidates future performance in the role. Employers are looking for candidates who possess the necessary skills, as well strong cultural fit, adaptability and critical thinking.

The Stages of the Interview Process

The traditional interview process typically consisted of one or two rounds of interviews. Today, the interview process involves multiple stages to comprehensively assess the candidates skills, experience, qualifications and suitability for the role.

Initial Screening: The first stage is usually a phone or video interview, where recruiters assess how closely your skills, experience and qualifications align with the role. They may also evaluate your communication skills and enthusiasm for the role. This helps the recruiter to short-list candidates for interview by obtaining additional information which may not have been included in your application.

Technical or Skills Assessment: Depending on the nature of the role, you may be asked to complete a technical assessment, skills test and/or psychometric tests. This can be anything from coding challenges to written assignments or case studies which test your problem-solving abilities.

In-Person or Virtual Interviews: An in-depth interview is usually conducted by a hiring manager, team lead, or cross-functional colleagues. You’ll typically be asked behavioural or competency-based questions, situational questions, and in-depth questions about your experience, how have handled real-life scenarios, and what motivates you. This may take place face-to-face or via online video conferencing such as MS Teams or Zoom. Many companies also assess cultural fit, either during the interview, or they may hold an informal meeting with team members.

Final Interview: Most companies hold a final interview with a senior leader for the preferred candidate(s).

Final Decision: The hiring team will review all feedback, and assessment results before offering the role to their chosen candidate.

Video Interviews: The rise of digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom enable recruiters to conduct interviews online, reducing the need to meet candidates face-to-face, which is more convenient for both parties.

AI-Powered Assessments: Many companies use AI-powered tools to streamline CV screening and shortlisting by evaluating how closely the candidates keywords, experience, and skills match the job description.

Automated Interview Scheduling: Platforms like Calendly and Greenhouse streamline interview scheduling, by allowing candidates to quickly select convenient interview times, reducing back-and-forth emails.

Assessment Platforms: For technical roles, coding platforms like HackerRank or Codility have become popular. These platforms allow employers to test candidates’ technical skills in a controlled, standardised environment, ensuring a fair evaluation.
